Passion
Dancing my passion, I was born to dance. I can remember as far back when I was a little kid, I always master the latest dances quickly and out shined everyone else doing them. I could care less about playing football or basketball, my passion was the dance floor.
Dancing was private world of adventure. I would get lost in the music for hours. I use to see myself dancing on stage before an audience of people. I never shared that with anyone. I used to spend whatever money I got on buying the latest 45 record or album. I used to play them on my little record player I had in my bedroom. I wonder whatever happen to it. As I reflect back all that dancing sure did keep me trim. I never had a weight problem what’s so ever. I did take some dance classes such as modern jazz, ballet and African but my spirit and soul wanted total expression. Not confine too much to technique.
I had my eye and heart set on a couple of things. I wanted to dance on Soul Train and for James Brown. I never missed a Soul Train episode on Saturday mornings. I was right front in the television screen. I did all lots of research on where that show was filmed at and how was I going to get there. But little did I know that Soul Train was holding a national dance contest in 52 cities with winners appearing on Soul Train. I said that was my ticket. But I did not have a partner. But a friend found one for me. The day of the dance off came and we showed up and must have dance for hours. It was down to 23 couples out of the hundreds that applied. I was tired but I danced my butt off. And the judges crowed me and my dance partners as winners. I never cried tears of joy so hard. Yep I was on my web to Hollywood to dance on Soul Train. I got that chance and will never forget it. I met my idols the soul train gang and of course the late Don Corneilous. And of course, I dance down the Soul Train line. So, dreams and passions do come true.
My second dream was to dance for James Brown on his Future Shock dance show. It was in Atlanta. I devised my plan to on how to get there. I decided to go to college in Atlanta. And behold my roommate was friends with one of James Brown dancers and connect me with her and that is how I got my chance to dance on his show. So I tell you never give up on your dreams and passions.
Now 65 and soon to be 66. I still feel even more connected to dance. I still teach dance today online in my zoom classes, social media and on my local cable TV show. I think I will still be doing this in my 70’s.
LOVE WHAT YOU DO. LIKE WHAT YOU DO!
When you do what you love and like what you do, you have a win / win life. I have no doubt what you love do and like to do is bringing some light in other peoples lives. Even if it’s just for a moment. One smile can brighten up the moment.
My source of inspiration is “God”. Not that I have figure God out and never will in this life time, but my daily moments sensing God’s presence is more than good enough.
